This institute was called the Academy of Gondishapour. It offered education in philosophy, theology, medicine, and science.Back in those days, the Greek Empire was in decline. The Roman Empire was executing all the scholars, priests, and philosophers in the name of religion. All the Greek followers of the pythagorean school of thought, all the Egyptian, Assyrian, and Chaldean priests and scholars were forced to flee for their lives.On the other side, the Arab culture was flourishing. Arabs aimed to conquer the world. They were executing non-believers and destroying everything they conquered on their path. In fear of persecution, all the great minds of the , were running for their lives.Shah-ann-Shah took advantage of this opportunity and welcomed these scholars into his empire. He gathered many of these priests, philosophers, and scholars and gave them refuge in Gondishapour.From the other corner of the world, he invited scholars and priests from India and the far East, and provided a conducive environment for them to explore and advance their arts of science and medicine.At the height of its , the Academy of Gondishapour was the prre world-class center of medicine, arts, and sciences. People from all around the world, From the remote corners of china to the farthest edges of Gibraltar took great pains to travel to Persia in order to look for a cure for their ailments. These trips often took months. Travelers often had to endure harsh weather, face barbarians and thieves, and risk their lives and savings, in order to reach this Academy.When Persia was invaded by Arabs, a muted form of the knowledge, which was unearthed in Gondishapour, was spread abroad. As Arabs relentlessly sought to conquer the west, they transported— this muted form of science and medicine to Africa and Europe. What most people don’t know, is that the foundation of the science and medicine we practice today, in the 21st century, was laid in Gondishapour, about 13 centuries ago.In the 19th and 20th centuries, this torch was passed on to what’s now known as Germany and nearby European countries. Later many of the scholars in these European countries migrated to the United States, where large hospitals, research facilities, and educational centers were erected throughout the land in order to practice and develop these arts and sciences.As we speak, new centers are popping up in every corner of the globe, and as passes, new specialty centers will flourish in just about every corner on every street, no matter where you are.In only a few short decades, the art of emergency medicine has advanced far beyond our wildest imaginations, but our understanding of chronic ailments is still primitive and crude. When it comes to chronic diseases, in most cases, all we can do is to relieve symptoms, but not cure.In the past century alone we’ve seen a rise in new epids like HIV and SARS. Diseases are getting more complex. Antibiotics like penicillin and the older generations are becoming practically useless. Microbes are becoming smarter, and genetic mutations are becoming more complex.In the future, I’m sure we will be able to handle emergencies with great success, but chronic diseases, well, they are going to get ever more complex. That’s because we think humans are physical machines. We just don’t know how to examine health and disease from the inside out.In the future, perhaps, in a not too distant future, maybe in as short as a few hundred years, except for emergencies, you will no longer find true healing in major medical centers or acad institutions.Instead, especially when it comes to chronic diseases, this torch will be passed on to men and women who have become well-versed in the art of health and healing from the inside out. It will be passed on to those who have unfolded their inner powers and unearthed the sacred secrets of these healing arts from deep within.Aside from emergency room specialists and first responders, you will no longer see doctors in “medical centers” per se.
